Summary
This weekend, Good Friends Group Fitness and the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of North Florida will host a 6-hour ride to help raise funds in their honor.

Joining a national effort called Ovarian Cycle, a non-profit foundation that sponsors the annual wellness program “Ride to Change the Future”, registered riders have been training for six-weeks free of charge to prepare for the 100-virtual-mile, indoor bike ride.

Funds raised are donated to the Ovarian Cancer Institute (OCI) and the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF) for research of an early diagnostic test. Participating cities for 2010 include: Atlanta, GA, Birmingham, AL, Boulder, CO. and Tallahassee, FL. This year, the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of North Florida, founded by a local ovarian cancer survivor, Kelly J. Smith and Good Friends Group Fitness have teamed up to bring this exciting event to Tallahassee for the first time.

More than 22,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year and because the symptoms are vague, often just resembling abdominal distress, the disease goes undiagnosed—until it’s too late.

“With 15,000 women a year losing their battle with Ovarian cancer, so many mothers, sisters, wives and friends in our community are lost to us,“ said Allie Merzer Fleming, co-owner of Good Friends Group Fitness. “It is our responsibility to help their friends and families raise money to fight this terrible disease.”

When: Sunday, May 16, 2010 – registration begins at 8:00am – ride starts at 9:00 am.

“Even if you are not able to ride, you can participate by donating or coming out to cheer on the participants as they ride,” says Ovarian Cancer Alliance of North Florida founder Kelly Smith. “This is such a fun way to work out and get into shape. Our hope is that one day ovarian cancer will be like polio, something we used to have to deal with.”

Good Friends Group Fitness is a family-friendly all group fitness center offering classes and kid-sitting services to working parents, downtown employees and Tallahassee residents in need for a customer-centric fitness center. Other local businesses have supported this effort, including bikes donated by Anytime Fitness & Play It Again Sports, food donated by Red Elephant, massages by Body Wisdom and media partners Opus Broadcasting and WCTV.
